2 Easy Ways Install Windows Fonts in Lubuntu

install-windows-fonts-in-lubuntu
Although I am linux user and open sources lover but having windows fonts in my linux is a must for me,
because the fact a lot of documents and web page are designed with microsoft windows standard fonts.

So adding Microsoft TTF fonts usually become must to ado after installing linux.

In lubuntu adding windows fonts is quite easy. These are two ways that I do to install windows fonts in my lubuntu.

1. Copy manually windows fonts from windows folder usually in C:\Windows\Fonts, then put and paste it in your lubuntu usually in Directory File System-usr-share-fonts. If can not copy it because need root permission, just open file manager with root

sudo pcmanfm

2. The second way is install it from terminal

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

Installing windows fonts is thing I always do when I have installed lubuntu and other linux distro especially debian family.

Lubuntu for Netbook, Fast Ubuntu with Full Desktop Suport

I work in my computer totally with netbook rightnow, I installed some OS in my netbook (Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Lubuntu 12.04). I work in my netbook most with linux (Lubuntu and Ubuntu) than windows.

Here I will tell you about my experience with Lubuntu in my netbook.

Lubuntu is fast alternate ubuntu distro with LXDE desktop environment - a lightweight DE. It consumes less netbook resources such as RAM. Lubuntu run very fast in my netbook, when I open/run application it only need a second. We can also install applications base of ubuntu because lubuntu is still ubuntu family that use same repository although actually lubuntu itself has prepared lightweight applications ready to used. But if you want more application, you are free to install application you need.

Lubuntu appearance is beautiful and elegant for fast computing, and it ready to use when I install it at first time. It is ready to play mp3, video, etc not like ubuntu that need any some codec to install at first time we install ubuntu.

So, Lubuntu is fast Linux OS with full desktop OS. If you need more fast performance OS, try Lubuntu.

Lubuntu vs Xubuntu

Lubuntu vs Xubuntu, which one is faster?

One way to make your Ubuntu run faster is to use lightweight desktop environment and lightweight applications.

Because more mature and feature-rich desktop systems typically provide more comprehensive set of configuration tools, while consuming more memory and taking longer to start and normal work.

Lubuntu and Xubuntu are alternative distributions of Ubuntu, both were designed to be lightweight distribution and can work good in computer with just 256 MB of RAM, based of LXDE and XFCE Desktop Environment respectively. Performance on netbook and alternatively slow computer is good and fast even in older computer. Both desktop environment are provide useful and adequate tools to work in everyday use without having you to resort manual editing system configurations file.

Requirements

Lubuntu need minimum 50-60 MB RAM to run and recommend 256 MB for optimal run.

Xubuntu need minimal 192 MB RAM to run and recommend 512 MB for optimal run.

Xubuntu is faster than Gnom/Unity desktop environment, and Lubuntu is faster than Xubuntu, compared with Gnome, XFCE, & KDE, and found that LXDE is the lightest and fastest of them all.

Lubuntu System Requirements

Lubuntu system requirements are minimal and Lubuntu consumes less PC power resources not like other Ubuntu derivative because Lubuntu focus on speed and energy-efficiency. In other word Lubuntu has very low hardware requirements.

Compare to other Ubuntu variant, Lubuntu is the fastest than all of them such as Xubuntu that use XFCE as default Desktop Environment. Lubuntu use LXDE as default desktop environment and light applications that make Lubuntu run very fast in PC and Laptop/Netbook even in old computers. So, if you are a big fan of Ubuntu and want a fast Ubuntu, try Lubuntu.

And for me, Lubuntu in my netbook is like super computer because of it's speed.

Here are a facts you should know about Lubuntu system requirements before install it.

Processors with Pentium II or Celeron is a minimal system required and make Lubuntu work great. But with newer Processors make Lubuntu faster.

Ram 128 MB or bigger is better and make Lubuntu run faster.

Generally, Lubuntu system requirement is minimal because Lubuntu focus in fast computing and older PC with minimal hardware and low power resources but lubuntu will run super fast in newer or higher pc.

Install Smartfren USB Modem CE682 in Lubuntu 12.04

I have been long time to use Smart Modem, from CDMA Modem until new one the USB Modem Smartfren.

Smartfren CE682 Evdo that I use.

As long I use Smart Product I think USB Smartfren is better and faster than previous Product. I use it in my PC desktop and I use it too in my netbook Acer Aspira One.

And to install it in Lubuntu is quite easy. I have tried this in Lubuntu 11.10 and the new one is Lubuntu 12.04.

This is simple way I do to install this Smartfren modem in Lubuntu. The way usually same as when I do it in Ubuntu.

First - open LXTerminal.

Start > Accessories > LXTerminal then type

sudo leafpad /etc/wvdial.conf

New window will appear then fill or replace with this script

[Dialer smart]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Carier Check = no
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Command Line = ATDT
Phone = #777
Idle Seconds = 0
Password = smart
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Stupid Mode = yes
Baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes
Ask Password = 0
ISDN = 0
Username = smart

Save and exit.

Second - check the product ID type

sudo lsusb

itsnex@itsnex-AO532h:~$ sudo lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 04f2:b19d Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 1c4f:0003 SiGma Micro HID controller
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 201e:1022

If the ID is 201e:1023 it means that your USB modem is detected as cd-room. So we need to eject this medium first by type the command

sudo eject /dev/sr0

You can change sr0 with sr1 or sr2 until you find no error

Third - type or paste this command

sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x201e product=0x1022

Now type

sudo wvdial smart

If you success you will find this messages

itsnex@itsnex-AO532h:~$ sudo wvdial smart
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.61
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ

Cleaning Software in Lubuntu

Like in Windows OS for long time we use computer there will be junk file or temporary useless files that can slow down our PC performance for long time used. To clean up the system in windows there is CCleaner to do it.

For I use Linux especially Lubuntu there are also some application for clean up my Lubuntu system from junk files.

There are some application for this purpose.

BleachBit - This application is very useful that can be used to free disk space, improve system performance, and make our Lubuntu system faster. To install it in Lubuntu can be done from Lubuntu Software Center and search BleachBit than install it.

We can also install BleachBit from LXTerminal (Start > Accessories > LXTerminal) than execute following command:

sudo apt-get install bleachbit

Ubuntu Tweak - This software is also my favorite cleanup tool. This application can clean old kernel that our system don't need any more and this will become junk file and will keep stay in our system if we don't do anything to clean it.

To install Ubuntu-Tweak just execute following command

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Now you can clean useless file or old kernel and improve Lubuntu system performance and make Lubuntu run faster.
